I-255 Northbound Lane Closure Alert: Details Inside

DUPO – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced a right lane closure will be encountered on northbound I-255 beginning Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 9 a.m. through Friday, September 6, 2024 at 3 p.m. Weather permitting, the right lane will be closed between exit 10 and exit 13. All entrance and exit ramps will remain open. These restrictions are needed to do pavement repair work. IDOT District 8 forces will make the needed improvements. Full access will be restored as soon as possible. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment. 100 Years Ago: A Labor Day Parade

ALTON - On Monday, September 1, 1924, Altonians celebrated Labor Day with a parade and big picnic in Rock Spring Park. The Building Trades Council and the Trades and Labor Assembly sponsored the “monster celebration.” The ladies’ auxiliary of the carpenters’ union decorated an especially spectacular float. The parade began at Sportsman’s Park in the East End at 9:30 a.m. and marched along Broadway to City Hall Square (what is now Lincoln-Douglas Square – a fire destroyed the original Alton City Hall on April 22, 1924), up Piasa Street to Third Street, and back to City Hall Square, where the parade disbanded. Afterwards, participants went to Rock Spring Park for the picnic and other activities. Great Godfrey Maze Preps for 2024 Season, Unveils Photos of Maze Design

GODFREY - The Great Godfrey Maze is gearing up for another fun season. The maze and activities will open on Sept. 20 and run through Oct. 27, 2024. This year’s maze is Peanuts-themed. In addition to the Great Godfrey Maze and Haunted Maze, families can enjoy hay wagon rides, a bounce pillow, the corn crib and the cow train, among other activities. “It is exciting. We always look forward to the maze,” said Chris Logan, Godfrey’s Parks and Recreation director. “It’s one of our oldest attractions we have here, and we’re happy we can still do it. Raging Rivers Offers Free Admission for First Responders

GRAFTON - Raging Rivers will offer free admission to first responders this weekend. From Saturday, Aug. 31, through Monday, Sept. 2, 2024, first responders can enter the water park for free with a valid work ID or badge. Vito Crowder Arrested On First-Degree Murder Charge

ALTON – The final suspect in the February 3, 2024, shooting that resulted in the death of 13-year-old Ra’niya Steward has been apprehended. Vito K. Crowder was taken into custody Thursday morning, Aug. 29, 2024, by Alton Police Detectives, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service (USMS), Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and the St. Louis County Police Department. Crowder was charged by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office on Feb. 14, 2024, with two counts of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons. These charges automatically certify him to be tried in adult court. The Alton Police Department expressed gratitude to the USMS, Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and the St. Louis County Police Department for their cooperation in the arrest. “The family of Ra’niya are in our continued thoughts and prayers as they await justice from this terrible incident,” the department stated.

EDWARDSVILLE - The Madison County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 hangup call in the 4300 block of Drda Lane, in unincorporated Edwardsville, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024. Deputies arrived on the scene uncertain if an emergency was present. Upon investigation, authorities determined that no emergency services were required. However, during the encounter, one of the individuals present was found to have an outstanding warrant for arrest. The individual was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Madison County Sheriff's Office. Milton Road In Alton Getting Million-Dollar Makeover

Motorcycle Collision in Godfrey: Rider Airlifted to St. Louis Hospital

GODFREY – The Godfrey Fire Department responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and a vehicle at the intersection of Godfrey Road and Stamper Lane on Wednesday night. Upon arrival, firefighters found one rider with severe injuries. Due to the extent of the injuries, a medical helicopter was summoned. The rider was initially taken to Alton Memorial Hospital and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis for further treatment. In response to the incident, the Madison County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. As a result, Godfrey Road is currently closed in both directions. Authorities have not released further details about the condition of the rider or the cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Illinois EPA Awards Over $483,000 to Public Water Supply Facilities for Energy Efficiency Upgrades

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Energy has awarded $483,790 to three Public Water Supply facilities – also referred to as Drinking Water Treatment Plants - through the Public Water Supply Energy Efficiency Grant Program. The selected projects will reduce each facility’s energy consumption with cost effective energy efficiency (EE) upgrades to drinking water treatment operations. Projects include lighting and control upgrades, pump or drive replacements and optimizations, and HVAC modifications. Collectively, the EE projects are estimated to save over 715,000 kWh of electricity annually.
