ALTON - The 63rd Annual Great River Road Run once again brought in runners from across the country and had a big impact economically on Alton with 400-plus runners who signed up. “I just recently heard there was somebody from Newfoundland here,” Race Director Russ Colona said. “We get them from all over. A few years ago I looked and we had runners from 26 different states running this race. “People come by and wave at me. They are happy and having a good time and that is great to see.” Kayleigh, a runner, said they heard about the race from a friend and wanted to come out and give it a try. It can be temporary or permanent depending on the patient. “You may have six months to live.” The words hit Rick Kurth like a ton of bricks. Since 2004, the attorney from Danville, Illinois, had been managing a virus in the left ventricle of his heart. On March 23, 2022, Rick was at an Indianapolis, Indiana, hospital, and he thought he was going home after some tests. Instead, doctors told the then-72 year-old that his heart was not pumping blood the way it needed to. In other words, it was failing. Even worse, Rick says the providers told him he was not a candidate for a new heart. EDWARDSVILLE – City officials are happy to announce a groundbreaking will take place this month for the East Fire Station, a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance the City’s ability to serve and protect residents for years to come. The groundbreaking will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29. The City cannot accommodate the public for the ceremony out of an abundance of caution as the site does not offer public parking at this time. The region has followed the statewide trend of increased job growth in the latest unemployment stats released by the state. The not-seasonably adjusted unemployment rates for local counties are as follows: Madison County’s unemployment rate is 3.8 percent in October 2022 compared to 3.8 percent in October of 2021. Jersey County is lower at 3.2 percent for October 2022, compared to 3.3 percent in October 2021. The other unemployment rates for area counties are as follows: Macoupin County 3.6 percent in October compared to 3.5 percent in October 2021. Calhoun County has a 3.8 percent rate in October 2022, compared to 3.6 percent in October 2021. Greene County’s rate is 3.7 percent in October against 3.6 percent in October of a year ago. Alton has a 5.5 percent unemployment rate in October 2022, compared to 5.8 percent last year at the same time. ALTON – Alton Pride’s first annual Thanksgiving Food Drive Competition was a huge success. Ten area bars participated in the competition which ran October 29 through November 12. A grand total of 2,111 non-perishable food items were donated over the two-week period. The donations collected were paired with turkeys and donations from Mike & Mikey Klasner and Friends. This partnership successfully provided 55 Thanksgiving meals to Alton Riverbend Head Start and Alton School District families. A large donation was also made to the Crisis Food Center in Alton. LITCHFIELD – The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Internal Investigation (DII) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Litchfield. ISP, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Litchfield Police Department officers responded to call of a person with a gun. Just after 10 a.m., Thursday, November 24, 2022, officers located the suspect in the parking lot of Taylorville Community Credit Union. The subject displayed a firearm and two Litchfield police officers, a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy, and an ISP trooper discharged their firearms. The suspect was struck and disarmed, and then transported to the hospital. No officers were struck or injured during the incident. SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will host the annual Christmas Remembrance Ceremony for Illinois soldiers listed as prisoners of war or missing in action (POW/MIA) during the Vietnam War on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m., and it’s open to the public. EDWARDSVILLE – The Edwardsville Police Department is relaunching its Citizens Police Academy to provide participants with a hands-on opportunity to experience and learn about law enforcement. The academy will be offered over 10 weekly sessions to be held from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning January 17, 2023. “One of the main benefits and goals of the Citizens Police Academy is for the cadets to be able to see and experience what Edwardsville police officers do on a daily basis,” said Edwardsville Police Sgt. SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Police (ISP) is increasing public safety by providing updates and clarity to two firearm ownership tools aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of those who pose a significant threat to themselves or to others. Today, ISP adopted updates approved by the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) to the administrative rule governing Clear and Present Danger reporting under the Firearm Owners Identification Card ( FOID ) Act. The updated rule, which allows for a broader use of Clear and Present Danger reports, was proposed in the wake of the July 4, 2022 shooting in Highland Park. Clear and Present Danger reporting is a mechanism upon which ISP may revoke or deny a FOID for an individual who poses a serious threat. “When determining whether to issue or revoke a FOID card, it is imperative ISP has as much information and evidence as possible,” said ISP Director Brendan F.
