Wait! There is Alcohol in This! New Illinois Law for Alcohol Infused Products

SPRINGFIELD - The alcohol marketplace has changed and so have the laws. Effective Jan. 1, 2025 bill SB 2625 went into effect. Alcohol-infused products such as alcoholic ice cream, whipped cream, popsicles, and other similar products are now considered alcoholic beverages regulated by the Illinois Liquor Control Act and the ILCC. This law requires product separation for retail displays of alcohol-infused products and co-branded alcoholic beverages. For small businesses that cannot meet product separation requirements, the ILCC will provide required signage clearly identifying alcohol-infused products. Key Points "Alcohol-infused products" means any frozen or unfrozen, solid, or semi-solid food in a form other than liquid, including, but not limited to, ice cream, ice pops, whipped cream, gelatin-based products, and other similar products, containing more than 0.5% alcohol by volume. Retailers with sales floor space of 2,500 square feet or less and do not physically separate

Durbin Condemns President Trump's Art Of Appeasement To Russian President Vladimir Putin

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) condemned President Trump’s appeasement to Russian President Vladimir Putin—where Trump announced key concessions to Putin regarding Ukraine, while apparently ignoring Ukraine’s key demands. Durbin began his speech by recounting history in which British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain touted the now infamous Munich Agreement as the way to stave off Hitler’s Nazi Germany. One year later, Hitler invaded Poland and triggered World War II. “Over time, Chamberlain’s name became synonymous with the term ‘appeasement.’ And for good reason. You see, while Chamberlain’s goal of peace may have been honorable, he was dangerously naïve about the human nature of a tyrant in Germany who was bent on territorial and maniacal ambitions—pursuits that could only be thwarted with strength,” said Durbin. “Well, President Trump’s

Illinois Department of Revenue Reminds Taxpayers about Availability of Senior Citizens Tax Deferral Program

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) today reminded senior citizens about the availability of the Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program. The program, which works like a loan, allows qualified seniors to defer all or part of their property taxes and special assessment payments on their principal residences. The deadline to apply for the program this year is March 1, 2025. The maximum amount that can be deferred, including interest and lien fees, is 80 percent of the taxpayer’s equity interest in the property. The maximum deferral each year is limited to $7,500. Deferred amounts are borrowed from the state, who pays the tax bill to the county collector's office. Interest on the amount paid by the state accumulates and a lien is placed on the property for all deferred tax payments and interest. Three percent simple interest per year is payable upon death of the homeowner, at the time the home is transferred to a new owner, or sooner, if the program participant

This Day in History on February 19: Internment of Japanese Americans Begins

Welcome to another fascinating installment of 'This Day in History,' where we explore significant events that have shaped our world on February 19th. **The Most Impactful Event: 1942 - The Executive Order 9066** On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which authorized the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. This decision was influenced by the fear and prejudice that gripped the United States following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The order led to the forced relocation of around 120,000 individuals, two-thirds of whom were American citizens, to internment camps across the country. This event remains a poignant reminder of the dangers of racial prejudice and the fragility of civil liberties during times of war. In the decades that followed, there have been various efforts to rectify the injustices faced by Japanese Americans, including formal apologies and reparations from the U.S. government. The legacy

Godfrey Considering Widening Straube Lane

GODFREY – Property owners near Straube Lane in Godfrey asked village trustees on Tuesday to consider widening the road to accommodate heavily increased traffic. Longtime Straube Lane resident Marilyn Kuhn said she’s seen firsthand how traffic in the area has grown, while the road itself has not. “I’ve been living there 46 years, and over the years, more people have moved out there. It’s getting quite busy and Straube Lane is very narrow,” Kuhn said. “When there’s a school bus or dump truck or … any kind of larger vehicle, I have to go in the grass – and if the grass is soft, it’s in mud … I’m just asking if the village would consider widening Straube Lane.” Kuhn also voiced concerns about a derelict property in the 900 block of Straube Lane, and asked the board to look into ways to mitigate a sharp left turn on Straube Lane where there was recently an accident. Carol Baker also spoke in support

IDOT Operations Engineer: Travelers Urged To Drive Defensively And Plan Ahead During Snowy Conditions

COLLINSVILLE - IDOT Operations Engineer Joe Monroe has been out throughout the entire region today on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, observing the various state routes. When interviewed in the late morning, he said while high-volume interstate routes are generally in good shape, ramps were at that time somewhat hazardous due to snow accumulation and ongoing weather conditions. Monroe noted that the heaviest snowfall was occurring in the southern part of the region, with varying accumulation levels reported to the north. “If you are driving defensively, you can get where you need to go,” he advised. Traffic levels are crucial, he said, when it is this cold because sufficient vehicles moving at adequate speeds can help prevent snow from accumulating on the roads. As of early Tuesday afternoon, Interstate 255 was in decent condition, with plowing efforts ongoing in areas such as Homer Adams Parkway in Alton, which experienced more significant snowpack compared to other routes, Monroe

ALTON - Community members are invited to the new Riverbend Community Orchestra’s upcoming performance. At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, Riverbend Community Orchestra (RCO) will perform at Calvary Baptist Church in Alton. The concert is free and will feature selections from musicals like “The Sound of Music,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “West Side Story” and more. Jamie Pullen, President of Alton Youth Symphony (AYS), explained that AYS piloted the creation of RCO a few months ago. AYS directors realized there was a “gap” between AYS, which is for fifth through eighth graders, and the more challenging repertoire of the Alton Symphony Orchestra (ASO) for adults. They created RCO so that high schoolers without an orchestra program available to them, as well as community members who want to play music but aren’t ready for ASO, have an option. “It's fulfilling a lot of different needs,” Pullen said. “Thi
