On this day, thousands of Black schoolchildren in the township of Soweto protested against the mandatory use of Afrikaans in schools—a policy many considered oppressive and emblematic of the apartheid regime’s broader racial segregation policies. Though the protest started peacefully, it escalated when police opened fire on the demonstrators, killing many youths, including the widely remembered Hector Pieterson. The uprising galvanized international attention and intensified resistance within South Africa, contributing significantly to the eventual dismantling of apartheid in the early 1990s. June 16 is now commemorated annually
