In a nice vs. nice debate, nobody won and nobody lost

1 year 1 month ago
In tonight's vice-presidential debate, J.D. Vance obviously made a calculated decision tonight to tone the rhetoric way down and introduce himself to America as a friendly, reasonable guy. On some important issues he backed way down. Deport 25 million illegal immigrants? How about a million criminals and then we'll think about the rest. Ban abortion? ...continue reading "In a nice vs. nice debate, nobody won and nobody lost"

Early voters not waiting for VP debate before casting ballot

1 year 1 month ago

1 year 1 month ago
Taylor Swift is in the news, and not just because she has become the most decorated solo artist of all time. The fact that Taylor Swift has already been mentioned multiple times on Walled Culture underlines that she is also an important – if surprising – figure in the world of copyright. That’s because Swift has been re-recording her albums in […]

Godfrey Closer Than Ever To Getting Hotel

1 year 1 month ago
GODFREY - The Village of Godfrey is closer than it’s ever been to getting a hotel. Economic Development Director Jim Mager announced on Tuesday that a national chain may be interested in building a Godfrey location if the village is willing to provide incentives. The interested company is Choice Hotels , which Mager described as a national chain with a nation-wide reservation system. Choice operates many hotels under various brand names , including Comfort Hotels, Quality Inn, and more - though it’s not clear yet which name and logo would be on the Godfrey hotel. “Where we are is that if the village comes in for a certain amount of money … I think Choice Hotels might have investors lined up,” Mager said, adding the project may also require some local investment. “We’re trying to put together a project to get it financed so it can move forward.” Mager said the next phase of the project is to develop a business plan to get

Let us hold Donald Trump to normal standards of conduct. Please.

1 year 1 month ago
At the New York Times, Bret Stephens and Gail Collins take up their weekly conversation: Bret: I’m still where I was last week: waiting for Harris to persuade me to vote for her. What’s wrong with asking her to sit down for a one-on-one interview with a serious journalist who will ask some tough but ...continue reading "Let us hold Donald Trump to normal standards of conduct. Iran hoists a white flag

1 year 1 month ago
Iran's "sharp escalation" today involved less than 200 missiles and, apparently, zero casualties. It's barely conceivable that this wasn't intensely deliberate. Twice now, Iran has lobbed missiles at Israel, and both times they've done it with plenty of warning, small numbers, and ineffective targeting. They might as well be wearing a sandwich board announcing that ...continue reading "Iran hoists a white flag"
