Durbin Meets With Predominantly Black Institutions Of Illinois

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) met with Presidents and staff from Chicago State University (CSU) and Malcolm X College to discuss federal support for Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) in Illinois. During the meeting, Durbin and the school leaders also discussed the struggles PBIs face in securing federal investments, and expressed support for increased federal funding to help PBIs build capacity and student support services. “Predominantly Black Institutions, particularly those in Illinois, offer high-quality, educational opportunities and financial support to Black students,” said Durbin. “In speaking with presidents and staff from Illinois’ PBIs today, I reiterated my commitment to working alongside these institutions to secure federal resources for their schools and the students they serve.” Photos of the meeting are available here . Vintage Voices' Success Continues With Another Record-breaking Season

ALTON - Vintage Voices' record-breaking turnout in 2023, with 633 guests, is a testament to the community's strong support and the event's growing popularity. “Each year we’ve experienced an increase in attendance and the number of sponsorships,” said committee chair Jody Basola. “We are so grateful for the community’s appreciation of this event.” A treasured October tradition, Vintage Voices features costumed actors portraying historical individuals near their grave sites in the picturesque Alton Cemetery. The unique setting and the fact that the actors write their own scripts gives guests the feeling that they are learning first-hand about the individuals' contributions to Alton’s history. While the primary mission is to preserve and share local history, Vintage Voices makes an additional impact by giving back to the community. Anheuser-Busch Brewery Lights Kicks Off This Saturday

One of St. Louis' most beloved holiday traditions is back this week, as Brewery Lights at Anheuser-Busch's flagship brewery in Soulard kicks off Saturday. This year, the brewery is promising some exciting new features, including a 50-foot digital tree (there's also a 22-foot tree if that's more your speed). A new "dazzling light show" will take place multiple times each night and last for 10 minutes at a time, and Yule Groove performances take place twice nightly.

Cook County Board Of Commissioners Unanimously Approves Balanced $9.26 Billion FY2024 Budget

COOK COUNTY - Today, the Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a balanced $9.26 billion FY2024 budget which includes millions in funding for equity programs and pandemic relief without increasing taxes or cutting vital services. The budget passed unanimously 17-0, following a month of departmental hearings, commissioner questions, and amendment proposals. “We have faced no shortage of challenges but despite these many difficulties over the last couple of years, we are in a strong financial position,” said President Preckwinkle. “This is a balanced budget that provides equitable services to our residents without any tax or fee increases. Illinois Payroll Jobs Decrease, Unemployment Rate Up In October

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today that the unemployment rate increased +0.2 percentage point to 4.6 percent, while nonfarm payrolls decreased -15,000 in October, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and released by IDES. The September revised unemployment rate was 4.4 percent, unchanged from the preliminary September unemployment rate. The September monthly change in payrolls was revised from the preliminary report, from +9,500 to +11,400 jobs. The October unemployment rate and payroll jobs estimate reflect activity for the week including the 12th. In October, the industry sectors with the largest monthly payroll job declines included: Professional and Business Services (-6,700), Manufacturing (-5,300), Financial Activities (-2,900), and Educational and Health Services (-2,900). Sierra Club Illinois Applauds The Unveiling Of Monarch Butterfly License Plate Decal

SPRINGFIELD - Today, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias unveiled the monarch butterfly decal license plate, a project seven years in the making that will support the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) Monarch Habitat Fund. Funds from the decals will directly support Illinois’ efforts to foster habitats that support butterflies’ migratory journey south to Mexico each fall. In partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Illinois Environmental Council, Sierra Club Illinois’ Monarch Team proudly advocated for this project starting in 2016.
