City Backs Off Late-Night Dispersal of St. Louis City Hall Encampment

St. Louis city officials called off the planned disbandment of a camp of unhoused people in front of City Hall in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Police had congregated at a park around City Hall late Monday night to evict the camp’s holdouts at 10 p.m., but protestors and some residents of the camp refused to leave.

Dozens of people living in a makeshift encampment on the lawn of St. Louis' City Hall will be forced to move. A spokesperson for St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones said the city made the decision to "decommission" the encampment at 10:01 p.m. Monday by enforcing a curfew law that effectively closes parks in the city between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless a person has a permit issued by the Board of Public Service or the director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.
