Tourism Bureau to Unveil Piasa Park Plans Tuesday in Alton
Byway Discovery Center and Piasa Park redevelopment part of $10 Million Illinois Capital Grant Development Project ALTON - Plans for the redevelopment of Alton’s Piasa Park including the addition of a new Byway Discovery Center will be presented at the Alton Riverfront Advisory Commission meeting on Tuesday, March 28 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Alton City Hall council chambers. The meeting is open to the public and comments are welcome. The much-anticipated project calls for the redesign and redevelopment of Piasa Park – home to the painting of the Piasa Bird on the limestone bluff walls -- and a new state-of-the-art Byway Discovery Center. The project is funded by a Capital Bill Grant received by the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau to create and enhance product development along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway in Alton and Hartford. JERSEYVILLE - Washington St. Barber Shop & Social Club opened at 117 S. Washington St. in Jerseyville a couple weeks ago, and owner/founder Chris Heberling said it’s already proven popular with the community as they gear up for an Open House on April 15. Heberling’s son is the head barber at the shop, who is currently finishing up barber school and works for just tips until he finishes school and goes full-time at the shop in July. Among his specialties are bald fades and beard fades, and Heberling said they can do “all types of hair.” “We can do any kind of haircut - a lot of people here in town do not,” he said. “We had people calling the other day and they wanted to know if we can do Black hair - we can do anything. How a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship turned into a 20-year friendship
Kristen Slaughter and Kiara Brown have an unconventional friendship. They’re 22 years apart in age and their relationship was only supposed to last one year. Matched through a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri mentorship program, the two have now been friends for 20 years. Slaughter was recently named CEO of the nonprofit organization, and Brown now has her own career and is the mother of two children.

City Of Collinsville Maintains Aa3 Credit Rating
COLLINSVILLE — The City of Collinsville recently completed a review by Moody’s Investor Services, which is required to analyze the overall credit worthiness and financial outlook of the City. As a result of this review, the City will maintain its Aa3 credit rating. There are several key factors that led to this rating being upheld and the negative outlook being removed. The recent vote upholding the City’s Home Rule Status by its citizens was the largest factor leading to this rating. Additional factors include growth in reserves and liquidity through strong financial management, which includes long-term liability management (elimination of debt service), economic developing leading to revenue growth, and management of overall spending to maintain and grow reserves. Collinsville City Manager Mitch Bair said the credit rating is an outstanding outcome for the City. “Maintaining our Aa3 credit rating from Moody’s is tremendous for the residents of the City.

South Roxana Strongman Competition Was The "First Of Its Kind"
SOUTH ROXANA - A strongman competition was held in South Roxana last Saturday at The Complex Training Facility. Owner Ryan Szymarek said the event was “the first of its kind” and so successful that they plan to host another competition later this year. “The strongman event was the first of its kind for the gym and in South Roxana that I know of,” Szymarek said. “Even though the weather was terribly cold, we had a great turnout of around 70 people and 10 competitors from gyms around the Illinois and Missouri area.” The event was sanctioned by United States Strongman (USS), which oversees all strongman events throughout the country.
