Madison County Promotes Benefits of Planting Gardens

2 years 7 months ago
EDWARDSVILLE — Madison County is promoting the benefits in planting vegetable gardens. April is both National Garden Month and Stress Awareness Month and officials say what better way is there to promote both growing nourishment for your body and your mind. “Planting a vegetable garden is both rewarding and relaxing,” Chairman Kurt Prenzler said. “Although the goal is to produce plants and eat healthier, it also reduces stress.” Prenzler said it does not matter if someone lives on one acre of land or keeps a few pots on a patio. “It shouldn’t matter where you dig in the dirt,” he said. “Just dig! You can work in a garden by yourself or with others in a community garden. “No matter what, nothing tastes better than something you’ve grown yourself.” Prenzler said the county contributes $50,000 in annual funding to the University of Illinois Extension office, which serves Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties an

Op-Ed: Rep. Elik's March 2022 Legislative Update

2 years 7 months ago
This is my ninth update to the citizens of the 111 th district, as your State Representative. I’ve been in Springfield each week since February 15 th , after having some January and early February session weeks cancelled. We are working to meet deadlines to get bills heard, amended and passed out of committees, therefore much of our time has been spent in committee meetings. Committee work has all been virtual since I took office, but I finally got to experience a few in-person hearings in the Capitol this month. The ability to quickly speak with our colleagues during meetings instead of texting, and not having to be on more than one meeting at a time, was a vast improvement over virtual meetings. In the House most committees are still virtual, but the Senate has had in-person committees more frequently recently. The legislature plans to adjourn on April 8 th this year. This is much earlier than the usual May 31 st adjournment. Schedules have been compressed to get our work

For his efforts on the baseball field this early season, McMurray has been selected as Granite's Stillwater Senior Living male Athlete of the Month. McMurray, who plays for head coach Scott Smallie, felt the Warriors played hard and well against the Tigers in a recent game, especially in a rally that led to three runs in the top of the fifth inning, and actually had the potential game-tying run on deck before the Tigers countered by scoring five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. 2 years 7 months ago
E LSAH - Connect Elsah is a group of community members working with Accelerate Illinois and the Benton Institute to try to get improved internet services for the Elsah area. Elsah-area residents can take an online or paper survey about their current internet conditions, which will lay the groundwork for the steps ahead. “Initially, our group thought that everyone had good internet services except for the homes in the valley of Elsah,” said Susan Young, a member of Connect Elsah. “But as we investigated, we kept finding more folks in the rural areas around us who also have either poor or no coverage at all. Young said the first step in improving internet services around the area is determining what the current conditions are like. To help do this, Connect Elsah has created a survey that can be taken online or by paper. To take the survey online, visit go.illinois.edu/ConnectElsah . If you need a paper survey, call (314) 514-5493 or email connectelsah@gmail.com
