2 years 7 months ago
CHICAGO — As part of an ongoing effort to carefully roll back Illinois’s COVID-19 executive orders, Governor Pritzker today updated masking and testing requirements for healthcare facilities and long-term care centers. These new guidelines, which go into effect today, are in line with updated Center for Disease Control recommendations. Federal requirements remain in effect for those facilities. “Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our health care workers and residents, Illinois has done better at keeping our people safe with vaccines, boosters, and masking, which puts us in a position to continue to scale back health care requirements in line with the CDC,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “COVID-19 is on its way to becoming endemic, like the flu, but it still poses a real threat to our immunocompromised and disabled communities. Here in Illinois, we look out for one another—it’s what defines us as Illinoisans. Let us continue to live up to those

Illinois' Poison Center Offers Safety 'Tricksโ€™ To Prevent Poisoning This Halloween

2 years 7 months ago
CHICAGO – Parents and caregivers need to beware of more than just ghosts and goblins this Halloween. According to the Illinois Poison Center (IPC), accidental poisonings from Halloween candy are rare, but IPC manages cases each year involving dry ice, glow sticks, and more. “It is very rare to get poisoned from Halloween candy, but parents should still check their child’s candy as a safety precaution, especially with the recent increase in the use of candy-like products that contain THC or fentanyl,” said IPC Medical Director, Michael Wahl, MD. “While IPC doesn’t typically see poison incidents involving candy during this time of year, we do get calls about glow sticks, dry ice, and other potentially harmful items children eat.” Make sure Halloween is scary for the right reasons by following these safety tips from the IPC. Candy: Inspect your child’s candy after trick-or-treating. Discard candy with torn packages, holes, or opened

OSF Provides Some Answers About When To Get A Flu Shot

2 years 7 months ago
The CDC and ACIP recommend a higher-dose flu vaccine for people 65 and older. As we enter fall, the emails from your workplace or pharmacy may start to pop up in your inbox. “It’s time for a flu shot!” But how early is too early to get the yearly jab? It depends, says Jason Kole, MD , director of Emergency Department Services at OSF HealthCare in Danville, Illinois . Dr. Kole says every influenza season is different. When will it peak? What will be the dominant strain of the virus? How effective will the flu vaccine be against that strain? Plus, Dr. Kole says, health care providers are still devoting time to treating COVID-19 patients. “If actually hits the strain of flu that’s prevalent during that season, then the flu season’s going to be relatively mild,” Dr. Kole says. “If it doesn’t hit that strain, then we’re going to have a heavy flu season.” “We’re all going to have to stay on our toes

Frerichs Returns $11 M In Single Largest Unclaimed Property In The Nation

2 years 7 months ago
SPRINGFIELD - Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’ office made history this week when it returned $11 million to the estate of a Chicago man who died of natural causes just before Christmas in 2016. It is the largest returned unclaimed property dollar amount in the nation’s history. Most of Joseph Richard Stancak’s 119 heirs reside in Poland, where his parents were born, as well as Slovakia. And little is known about how Mr. Stancak accumulated such wealth so quietly, although he did own a boat named “Easy.” “This is a life-changing amount of money,” Frerichs said. “I only wish we knew more about Mr. Stancak.” Unclaimed property refers to money or accounts within financial institutions or companies in which there has been no activity for several years.
