BETHALTO - 1 st MidAmerica Credit Union recently awarded five, $1,000 scholarships to local area high school graduates Alyssa Mann, Aubrie Hancock, Cate Breden, Kathryn Pelot, and Lucas Moore. Alyssa Mann is a graduate of Civic Memorial High School. She plans to attend Southwest Baptist University to pursue a degree in Exercise Science, then obtain a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Aubrie Hancock, a graduate of Alton High School, plans to attend Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville and earn a degree in Music and Vet Tech. GODFREY – Lewis and Clark Community College and its National Great Rivers Research and Education Center are looking for exhibitors to take part in this fall’s 21 st annual Water Festival, a day for students and educators to explore all things water. The event will take place at Lewis and Clark’s Godfrey Campus. This year is expected to draw the biggest turnout yet, with over 700 fifth grade students from Lewis and Clark’s district expected to participate. “Water Festival provides a rich learning opportunity, not only for our area students, but also for teachers to learn,” said Interim Education Director and Swarovski Waterschool Coordinator Jen Mandeville. ALTON - “Al-Anon saved my life.” These are the words of Shirley S., an outreach coordinator for a local Al-Anon group who hopes to bring a new Al-Anon chapter to Alton through OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center. Starting this summer, Shirley will host “How Al-Anon Works” meetings from 10–11:15 a.m. on Thursday mornings at OSF Saint Anthony’s. The program will run from June 22 to Sept. 28. Participants can learn about Al-Anon and how it could benefit them and the community. If there’s enough interest, the group will register with the Al-Anon World Service and become an official Al-Anon group with regular meetings at OSF St. Anthony’s. Al-Anon and Alateen are support groups for people who are worried about someone with a drinking problem, according to the organization’s website . CHICAGO - Attorney General Kwame Raoul urged the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to advance artificial intelligence (AI) governance policies that prioritize robust transparency, independent standards, testing and assessment requirements, and external audits, and allow for government oversight and enforcement where appropriate. Raoul joined a coalition of 23 attorneys general in submitting a comment letter to the NTIA. The attorneys general applaud the agency’s commitment to a rigorous and data-driven approach to developing AI governance policies. The coalition recommends that the NTIA create independent standards that require transparency about the use of AI and recognizes that some AI uses present greater risks and require more oversight than others. “Consumers should be informed if companies are using AI in their products and services, and the potential impacts on people should be considered in shaping regulations,” Raoul said.

GLEN CARBON - The Glen Carbon Police Department welcomed two new police officers at the Village Board meeting last night. Officers Christopher Nicholas and Mitchell Reynolds took the oath and were officially sworn in by Mayor Bob Marcus after some introductions from Police Chief Todd Link. Reynolds was issued badge number GLEN64 while Nicholas was issued Badge number GLEN65. Both were hired after the department received a COPS grant of $250,000 to expand their personnel. EDWARDSVILLE — Zachary Capers will serve the rest of his life behind bars because of a decision announced Tuesday. Capers was issued a sentence of 60 years in prison on Tuesday for the murder of Edwardsville's Michael Ladd, 89, and Dr. Lois Ladd, 68. Madison County State's Attorney Thomas Haine made the announcement about Capers' sentence. Capers had entered a guilty plea to a count of first-degree murder. Lois was a chiropractor and Michael had worked professionally as a contractor. Capers, 28, of Collinsville, will receive credit for time served but will be required to spend his entire sentence in prison. The two were stabbed and killed at their residence at 826 North Kansas Street in Edwardsville. The couple was found deceased in their Edwardsville home on March 18, 2019. SPRINGFIELD – Wildlife biologists and conservation police from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) are monitoring reports of black bear sightings in Lake County. The most recent sighting occurred in a backyard in Antioch during the weekend. The bear’s current location is unknown at this time, and IDNR has received no further reports of sightings since early Sunday morning near Antioch. Wildlife biologists believe the Antioch bear is likely the same black bear that was seen in Gurnee last week. Bears are known to travel long distances. This particular bear has not caused any problems, and IDNR encourages people to let it continue its movement without interference. Should anyone see a bear, IDNR encourages them to report it online at https://bit.ly/ IDNRwildlifereport . IDNR further recommends that people who live in the vicinity of a confirmed bear sighting secure their garbage cans and barbecue grills indoors and stop feeding birds for a few days. I

EDWARDSVILLE - One of the strong points of the Edwardsville Route 66 Festival is there is something for everyone. The day started with the Metro Milers 10K Run, then the festival officially opened at 10 a.m. There was a wide variety of marketplace vendors at the event, a family zone, a local musical showplace, a car show in the Cassens Parking Lot, then the Matt Taul Band, Butch Wax and the Hollywoods and the Well Hungarians closed the night's entertainment. Edwardsville is one of the oldest communities on the historic road. Grace Pellock, special events and marketing coordinator for the City of Edwardsville Park and Recreation team, said she loves the Route 66 Festival. "We expanded the weekend this year and made it a Route 66 theme. The Route 66 Festival is very beloved in the community. ALTON - A newly founded Alton-based nonprofit organization, Sacred Spaces of CARE, is joining efforts alongside the Alton Police Department to address mental health and combat crises. Sacred Spaces of CARE will partner with the department to engage in collaborative, trauma-informed practices to educate, further equip, appropriately support, and safely respond to crises through the creation of the RISE (Restorative Intervention Support Efforts) Program. From 5–8 p.m., local leaders and citizens will fill C & K Banquet and Party Center to talk about possible solutions to gun violence in the community. CARROLLTON - Battery, aggravated sexual assault of a child, and several other charges have been filed against individuals in Greene County over the past few weeks, according to the latest Greene County Jail Booking Report. Michael D. Moran, 54, of Carrollton, was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault of a child. He was arrested by the Greenfield Police Department on May 19 and remains in custody. Jamie L. Farris, 37, of White Hall, was charged on June 9 with domestic battery and aggravated battery. Farris had previously been arrested a month earlier on May 9 for aggravated battery causing great bodily harm to a peace officer, as well as disorderly conduct. She was taken into custody and released on her own recognizance before being arrested again on June 9 by the Scott County Sheriff’s Department for the domestic/aggravated battery charges.
