Organ Donor Registry Expands Under New Belt Law

2 years 10 months ago
CHICAGO – People will have an additional opportunity to become an organ donor thanks to a measure championed by State Senator Christopher Belt that was signed into law Friday. “Organ donors save countless lives every year,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “After living on dialysis for a year, I received a kidney transplant in January 2010. I know the importance of giving people more opportunities to become organ donors.” House Bill 4696 allows the Department of Natural Resources to offer online hunting license holders the opportunity to be redirected to the First Person Consent Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. On average, 300 people die each year waiting for an organ donation. More than 4,700 Illinois residents are waiting for an organ or tissue donation. In 2020, there were 7 million Illinoisans registered as organ donors. The first-person consent law provides an opportunity to save more lives and ensures that your wish to be an organ/tissue donor is honored.

2 years 10 months ago
MT. VERNON - Holland Construction Services recently broke ground on the new Mt. Vernon Police Station located at Logan and 27th Street in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The new 25,000 square-foot building will offer all the amenities of a modern police facility with the latest in equipment technology and larger spaces for training, dispatch, and offices. Mt. Vernon Assistant City Manager Nathan McKenna said the current police station, which is a converted car dealership built in the 1970s, no longer fits the department’s needs. “This new facility will be state-of-the-art and wired for new technology,” said McKenna. He added that Holland was selected to build the new station based on the company’s experience with similar project types and their reputation in the region. “We’ve never done a project of this scale, so Holland’s expertise and ability to troubleshoot any issues that might arise was very important to us,” said McKenna. “A lo

Joe's Market Basket Offers Tips On How To Help Pollinators During National Pollinator Month

2 years 10 months ago
EDWARDSVILLE - Some scientists estimate that one out of every three foods we eat exists thanks to pollinating animals such as hummingbirds, bats, bees, beetles, butterflies, and flies. Without them, we wouldn't have fruits, vegetables, and nuts….not to mention chocolate and coffee. Over the past few years, certain pollinators like monarch butterflies and bees have experienced significant declines in population. In order to help the small creatures that give us so much, Joe’s Market Basket wants to offer people tips on how to create their own pollinator garden. “It’s nice to have beautiful things in your yard but they can also be functional,” said Joe’s Market Basket General Manager Andy Klos. “One of the best things to do to prevent the decline of pollinators is to make your garden a landing pad for them so they can get their nutrients and sugars to pollinate.” Klos said certain flowers and native plants like salvia, milkweed, butterfly

Child Porn Possession Investigation Into South Dakota Billionaire Closed With No Charges

2 years 10 months ago

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up to receive our biggest stories as soon as they’re published.

The South Dakota attorney general has closed its investigation into billionaire T. Denny Sanford for possession of child pornography and is not filing charges, according to a notice the office sent to a judge Friday.

The office “has completed its investigation” and “has determined that there are no prosecutable offenses within the jurisdiction of the State of South Dakota,” deputy attorney general Brent Kempema wrote.

The attorney general’s office provided no details on how that decision was made or whether Sanford is being investigated in any other jurisdictions or by federal authorities.

“Mr. Sanford appreciates the public acknowledgement by the SD Attorney General’s office” that the office’s Division of Criminal Investigation “has concluded its investigation and they have found no prosecutable crime,” one of Sanford’s attorneys, former South Dakota attorney general Marty Jackley, told ProPublica.

In 2020, ProPublica first reported that South Dakota authorities had started investigating the state’s richest man and had referred the matter to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Earlier this year, South Dakota officials acknowledged Sanford was still being actively investigated by federal and state authorities.

The Department of Justice declined to comment about whether its probe was still open.

The investigation of Sanford started with a tip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, court records show. The center is a private nonprofit that operates a tip line where people and companies can report images of suspected child sex trafficking and abuse. The organization’s staff reviews the tips and refers them to law enforcement.

Investigators obtained five search warrants in 2019 and 2020 for Sanford’s email, phone and internet data. It’s unclear what, if anything, investigators found in the searches.

ProPublica won access to the search warrants after more than a year of litigation that reached the state’s highest court. Sanford unsuccessfully asked the courts to conceal the search warrants, which are supposed to be publicly accessible under state law, and to block ProPublica’s reporting.

ProPublica is continuing a legal effort to obtain other records filed with the court that detailed why there was cause for those warrants. Sanford is fighting to keep those records private.

Sanford’s attorney has previously said that Sanford’s email account was hacked and being used by someone else.

In a new filing Friday, another of Sanford’s lawyers said a forensic examination of Sanford’s email account “uncovered the specific name of an individual other than the Implicated Individual having gained access.”

“Further evidence includes corroborating evidence of hacking,” Sanford’s attorney wrote, without providing any details.

The victim then drove down the Broadway Connector and was stopped at the intersection of East Broadway. The two suspects, who both were armed with firearms, approached the victim and attempted to remove the victim from the vehicle. The victim was able to safely drive away and the suspect’s attempt at the vehicular hijacking was unsuccessful." The chief added that a witness observed this occurring and watched as the two suspects return to the Jeep, at which point

Despite Reports Showing 100,000 Fewer Illinoisans, Democrats Demand More Federal Tax Dollars

2 years 10 months ago
(The Center Square) – Conflicting population estimates for Illinois continue to spur debate about whether the state is growing or shrinking as has been estimated for years. Gov. J.B. Pritzker sent President Joe Biden a letter requesting the federal government send Illinois more federal tax money. He said a recent Census survey shows the agency undercounted Illinois by nearly 2%. Democratic members of Illinois’ congressional delegation followed up with a letter to the Census urging the bureau to update the population for funding decisions. “We are writing in regard to the Census Bureau’s Post-Enumeration Survey (PES), which found that Illinois likely was undercounted at a rate of 1.97% in the 2020 Decennial Census,” the Democrats said. “With this knowledge comes the striking fact that Illinois did not lose residents, but rather, the State’s population is now at its largest in history with about 13 million residents. We are concerned about
