St. Louis officials have signed executive orders declaring states of emergency as a record amount of rainfall displaces residents and closes roadways. St. Louis County Executive Sam Page and St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones signed executive orders Tuesday that will enable the state of Missouri to request federal support. “Communities throughout our region were devastated by last night’s record rainfall and flooding,” Jones said in a statement.
We all know this country is capable of evils normally associated with authoritarian regimes — things like torture, illegal spying, the occasional exhortation to commit suicide, etc. But we expect the country we love to only violate our sense of justice for big things: War on Terror, War on Drugs, War on… Equal Rights, I […]
EDWARDSVILLE - Edwardsville Fire Department personnel called a Fire Box Alarm for a structure fire in the area of Richetta Drive in Edwardsville on Tuesday morning. The fire call went out at 7:22 a.m. Tuesday and responding agencies included Glen Carbon Fire, Wood River Fire, Bethalto Fire, Troy EMS, and Madison County Rehab unit. Responding crews found a 20 x 50 outbuilding with smoke showing from eaves. Eaves are a part of a roof that projects out horizontally beyond the side of the structure it covers. Firefighters entered the building and quickly extinguished the fire with 2 1-3/4-inch hand lines fed from a skid load, Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford said. "No one was in the building at the time and no one was injured during the fire, but some personal property was damaged and there was significant damage to one end of the structure," the chief said. The Edwardsville Fire Department said the fire is still under investigation.
The challenge claims that the federal government is attempting to force states and schools to follow antidiscrimination requirements that “misconstrue the law.”

ALTON - Alton Mayor David Goins today presided over the opening meeting of the new Alton Riverfront Advisory Commission. The Commission met in Alton City Hall and was formed for the purpose to help guide growth and development on the Alton Riverfront. At the outset of the meeting, the Mayor said that this was a great first step in renewing Alton’s relationship with the river. Goins said that “The City of Alton has a long history of utilizing its riverfront for commerce, transit, travel, and the movement of goods and products. Access and use of Alton’s riverfront are critical to the identity of Alton and to the entire region. The riverfront has long served as a focal point for Alton, since its founding as a major river commercial center.” Goins mentioned that Alton has long taken the position that our riverfront was important to the City: “It is our community’s front door." GRANITE CITY - Granite City was hit the hardest in the immediate area Tuesday morning with 8-8.5 inches of rainfall during the massive amount of thunderstorms that belted the area. Granite City had a similar rain event in 2019 when 9 inches of rain was dumped and it sparked flash flooding all around that area. More than 1,000 homes were left with flooded yards and basements and some homeless. Granite City Mayor Mike Parkinson and his staff have been busy since he was elected to try to shore up the problems the city has had for years with flooding. Mayor Parkinson made these statements today: “I have spent the morning with my team looking at trouble spots and talking with residents about this morning's regional flash flooding. The City focused last year on flooding mitigation by aggressively cleaning out ditches, upgrading/installing pumps, and authorizing approximately $8 million in infrastructure projects (shown below). “This morning’s event gave me an opportunity

Downtown St. Louis will not be seeing electric scooters strewn across the sidewalks anytime soon. The city banned scooters in the downtown and Downtown West neighborhoods earlier this summer after a string of public safety incidents, including an incident where two teen girls were shot in their thighs in early June. The city announced this afternoon that the ban will stay in place until the end of 2022.
