This is a little waterfall just off Angeles Crest Highway about halfway to Mount Wilson. I'd like to return to this spot, as well as to Colby Falls, when the spring runoff is heavy, but I have a feeling I won't be up to driving soon enough. Maybe next year.

Placeholder inflation forecasting post
As I was puttering around the BEA's release of GDP data, I noticed that it included the most recent PCE inflation indexes too. However, it's quarterly, not monthly, so we have to wait until tomorrow for the March numbers. Or do we? If we know the quarterly indexes from last year and the quarterly growth ...continue reading "Placeholder inflation forecasting post"

EDWARDSVILLE - Senior infielder Kayden Jennings had made a positive contribution to the success of the Edwardsville High School baseball team as the Tigers continue to defend their 2022 IHSA Class 4A state championship, and in a two-game series against Alton on Apr. 25-26, he combined for four hits and three RBIs as Edwardsville swept the series 16-6 and 13-1. Jennings felt he took solid at-bats than in games recently in Paducah, Ky. The Tigers continue to move right along and have been playing well, and it's especially a good time to be playing well, with the IHSA
The EU Designates 17 Sites As ‘Very Large Online Platforms’ Subject To DSA’s Most Stringent Rules
I’ve been criticizing the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) approach to internet regulations, because they’re doing this “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” bit in which they insist that the DSA is not regulating speech, but then they admit that the point of the DSA is to see less “bad” speech on the internet. But, whether we […]

Saraste Conducts the Dallas Symphony in Sibelius and Shostakovich
In 1948, five years after its premiere, the Eighth Symphony still managed to make trouble for Shostakovich. Andrei Zhdanov, the Soviet Minister of Culture and Shostakovich's most powerful nemesis, yanked it from obscurity just so he could denounce it at length. Another member of the panel, Vladimir Zakharov, a Soviet functionary and a minor composer, described it as "not a musical work at all" and "repulsive and ultra-individualistic," similar in sound to "a piercing dentist’s drill, a musical gas chamber, the sort the Gestapo used." Shostakovich was also condemned for the "pessimism, unhealthy individualism, extreme subjectivism, and willful complexity" of his symphony. Zhdanov ordered that all copies of the score be recycled and all recordings destroyed. I, on the other hand, have much nicer things to say about it.
