After decades of raw sewage floods, Illinois pledges $21 million to fix the problem

In the Metro East city of Cahokia Heights, sewer and stormwater systems are often so full that raw sewage seeps into residents’ yards. The city has experienced chronic flooding for two decades, but on August 3, Illinois announced it would spend $21 million to finally fix the problem. Reacting to the news, we hear from resident Sheila Gladney and researcher José Constantine, an assistant professor of geosciences at Williams College.

The floodwaters may be gone, but residents in the St. Louis region are still picking up the pieces after historic flooding in late July. In the weeks since, hundreds of flood victims were forced to wait hours at overcrowded aid centers. Now, more help is on the way: This week, teams from FEMA canvassed areas that were hit hard by extreme weather. STLPR reporter Jeremy Goodwin shares his observations from the first day of canvassing, and we hear from two flood victims about their needs as they wait for more resources.

She Made Everyone Feel Loved: Marti Richards Leaves 40-Year Legacy At Nautilus

ALTON - Marti Richards leaves a 40-year legacy at Nautilus as a manager. Marti was with Richard Drake, the previous owner when the business opened in 1979 by the old Root Beer Stand in Alton on Elm Street. Manager Matt Schulte, Assistant Manager Kaite Lopez, and Drake said Marti was a key part of the Nautilus business from the beginning until the end of her life. Marti died this past Tuesday. Drake said Nautilus moved to the Wilson/Coryell Racquetball Club behind Alton Square Mall for its next stop. “At that time, we also opened Shapin’ Up Health Spa, a women’s only fitness center, on the lower level,” he said. “Marti served as co-manager of the Spa and moved with us in 1981 to the current Nautilus location. Marti continued managing Shapin’ Up, which was located in the Keizer fitness room. She also began teaching aerobic classes. We eventually closed Shapin’ Up & Marti began to work in the Nautilus/cardio center, eventually becoming the manager.

Heavy rain may be back in St. Louis next week

The next “big thing” in the forecast is a weather system that should bring heavy rain and storms back to parts of Missouri and possibly Illinois Monday night into Tuesday. At the moment, the heaviest rain of 2-4 inches appears to be focused just west and southwest of the region. It will be a close call so we need to monitor this pattern closely for early next week.
